The eleventh season of the IPL is all set to start on 4th April, 2018. Every year before the game begins, the players are auctioned ever since the ceremony began. The players in the team decide the fate of the team. However, Indian Premier League 2018 auction was an “all-encompassing one” with certain rules applied on the “10 year rule”. The auction took place on 27 January and the second day will be on 28 January, 2018.
Indian Premier League: The 10 year rule
According to the 10 year rule, every player in every ten years irrespective of their value should be released by the team and made available in the auction. This became effective after BCCI allowed all the franchisees to release five players each. They were required to submit a list of players by 4th January that will be sent for auction.
The retention policy of the game stated that there are two ways in which they could retain their players. Either they could retain three players by direct retention or they could retain a maximum of three through Right to Match Cards. Right to Match (RTM) will be effective in the upcoming auctions.
IPL 2017 vs IPL 2018
This year, the salary cap of the players are increased. Last year the salary cap was Rs 66 crore, this year it has been increased to Rs 80 crore for the players. In the upcoming years, it is expected that the rate of the players would go up to Rs 82 or Rs 85 crore. However, the size of the squad went down from 27 to 25. According to the rule, every player would have minimum of 18 players. In each team, there can be only eight international players.
It is expected that the low category players will gain more. The uncapped players will receive an Rs 10 lakh boost in all the segments. Previously, the salary cap of the low category players were Rs 30 and Rs 50 lakh. This year it is expected to be Rs 75 and Rs 50 lakh.
What is Right to Match?
According to RTM, five players can be retained. Three can be retained through direct retention and three through Right to Match cards. The RTM card will be used during the auctions. Only three RTM cards will be used by the teams irrespective of the number of players they wished to retain. The number of players they wish to retain was submitted by the respective players on 4th January.
As per the Right to Match, if one player is bought by any franchise, the team he used to play for formerly can use the Right to Match card and make a bid to retain the player. These teams can only retain three players by using the RTM card twice in the auction.
Also, if the three players are capped players, RTM card can only be used for the uncapped or overseas players. Like, Chennai Super Kings have Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadega who are the capped players. Hence, the franchise can only use their RTM to buy the uncapped players through the normal process of bidding.
