The news is out: Freema Agyeman, who plays the major character, Dr. Helen Sharpe, on NBC’s New Amsterdam, is leaving the show.
According to reports, Agyeman will be appearing in the first few episodes of Season 5 before her character heads off to join a new hospital. While it’s always sad to see a beloved character leave a show, we’re excited to see what’s in store for Sharpe in the next phase of her career.
We’re also looking forward to seeing how New Amsterdam handles Sharpe’s departure. The show has always been excellent at depicting the realities of the medical world, and we have no doubt that it will do justice to Sharpe’s story.
Freema Agyeman wrote a heartfelt message on Instagram,
“I feel very fortunate to have connected with so many of you, while rolling around in the skin of Ms. Helen Sharpe, and witness every ebb and flow of your emotional investment in her. What a ride! Thank you for being on it with me.”
The actress continued, “She has meant so much to me, but the time has come for me to hang up her white coat, as I officially share the news that I will not be returning for the final season of New Amsterdam. While I am saddened, I am also incredibly excited to see how the story concludes as a fan of the series.”
We’ll be keeping an eye out for Season 5 of New Amsterdam, and we’ll definitely be tuning in to see Freema Agyeman’s final episodes.
