What is the Survivor Diversity News?
In June 2019, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement’s activities and discussions about anti-racist strategies, a group of Black Survivor alumni spoke publicly about their experiences and difficulties they faced as minorities in the program.
The “Soul Survivors Organization,” made up of contestants from seasons 1 through 40, circulated a petition asking the show to implement a number of anti-racist measures, such as casting BIPOC for at least 30% of each cast, hiring more BIPOC as crew members, and actively supporting the cast with resources for mental health after the season.
In November 2022, following the campaign, CBS declared that they would implement new guidelines for the program in an effort to improve diversity.
This includes devoting a minimum of 25% of its yearly unscripted development budget to shows created or co-created by BIPOC producers, as well as mandating that at least 50% of the contestants on each show by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
The Cast and Host of Survivor Season 44:
