2023 was an exceptional year for content, particularly in the OTT space, with a plethora of dynamic storytelling and exciting topics. This year, a number of our favorite stars, like Shahid Kapoor, Dulquer Salman, Dimple Kapadia, and Sonakshi Sinha, made their digital debuts with an amazing web series that amazed both viewers and reviewers. As the year comes to a close, we thought it would be fun to look back at some of our favorite web series that debuted on OTT platforms in 2023.
Lust Stories Season 2
Our first pick is Lust Stories, whichdid a great job tackling the challenge it had set for itself, with talented filmmakers highlighting women’s sexuality and presenting these relationships through a taboo, female-focused lens. The shorts have been directed by R Balki, Konkona Sen Sharma, Amit Ravindernath Sharma, and Sujoy Ghosh. The four-part anthology will feature actors such as Kajol, Neena Gupta, Vijay Varma, Mrunal Thakur, and Tamanaah Bhatia. If you still haven’t watched it, just watch it before the year ends.
The Night Manager
The Night Manager, starring Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sobhita Dhulipala, reimagines John le Carré’s compelling story against the backdrop of the Rohingya tragedy. The former naval lieutenant turned night manager Shantanu Sengupta is thrown into a dark conspiracy involving smuggling weapons and a risky escape. Anchored by Kapur’s enigmatic charisma, the series promises an enthralling trip through a world where shadows hide secrets and the night discloses hidden truths, from Dhaka’s lavish hotels to Shimla’s remote resorts.
Kohrra
Undoubtedly, one of the greatest Netflix series in recent memory is this tense and exciting one. Kohrra, directed by Sudip Sharma and written by Randeep Jha, is a criminal thriller with a complex plot and an ensemble cast that includes Rachel Shelley, Manish Chaudhary, Barun Sobti, Harleen Sethi, Saurav Khurana, and Survinder Vicky. It chronicles what happens following a horrifying groom’s murder and his closest friend’s sudden disappearance a few days before the wedding. The show explores intricate interpersonal interactions among family members in addition to presenting an exciting murder mystery.
Dahaad
This is one of the most fascinating criminal drama series, starring Sonakshi Sinha and Vijay Verma, about law enforcement and the police in recent years. It doesn’t contain any extravagant treatment or fast-paced action scenes. It reveals to us the human aspect of law enforcement officials who must submit to political and social constraints in addition to red tape.
The Railwaymen
The Railway Men: The Untold Story of Bhopal 1984 is a miniseries that digs into the brave acts of railway personnel during the poisonous gas leak at Union Carbide India Limited’s Bhopal plant. The series is narrated by R. Madhavan as Rati Pandey, the General Manager of the Central Railway Zone, with Kay Kay Menon playing the vital role of Iftekaar Siddiqui, the station master at Bhopal Junction railway station. The Railway Men illuminates a remarkable story of tenacity, selflessness, and unity that merits appreciation.
Saas, Bahu, aur Flamingo
This Hindi crime drama flips the traditional saas-bahu narrative on its head. Dimple Kapadia leads the pack as the tough-talking Rani Ba wields guns and cigarettes with equal self-confidence. The Rani Cooperative, a front for South Asia’s largest heroin mafia, is not your typical family company. Kajal and Bijlee, played by Angira Dhar and Isha Talwar, are not your average bahus, juggling tasks ranging from henchwomen to accountants in this covert operation. Meanwhile, Radhika Madan’s Shanta takes the family’s specialty—flamingo, a cocaine variant—to a whole new level of heat.
Kaala Pani
Kaala Paani, the Hindi-language survival drama series starring Mona Singh, Ashutosh Gowariker, and Amey Wagh, brings survival of the fittest to reality. As a mystery disease engulfs the region, the struggle for life intertwines with a riveting race to find a cure, weaving a web of personal relationships. Every episode of Kaala Paani promises to be a captivating chapter in this riveting narrative.
With this, our best 7 OTT shows of 2023 come to an end, but stay tuned and prepare for an exciting year ahead in 2024, especially if you’re a fan of web series, as various OTT platforms are about to release a variety of interesting content.
