The Byers have moved to California and Eleven has accompanied them. She is bullied by students because the loss of powers has made her vulnerable. Back in Hawkins Dustin, Mike and Lucas have joined a group named Hellfire that is led by Eddie Munson. Meanwhile, the cheerleader captain of Hawkins school, Chrissy, is possessed and killed by a figure from her visions.

The episode begins with a flashback revealing how Hopper survived the blast but was taken by the Russians. He is now working in a prison camp in Kamchatka. Hopper manages to bribe a prison guard and sends across a message to Joyce and Murray. In a different scene, police investigate Chrissy’s death and suspect Eddie but Max and Dustin get to Eddie first and explain how Vecna was responsible for Chrissy’s death. Vecna lures another student to the woods and kills him.
Owens manages to convince Eleven that Hawkins is in danger and that she needs to train to revive her powers. Joyce and Murray fly with the ransom to Alaska. Hopper has his own plans to escape. Max, Steve, Dustin, Robin and Nancy unite to learn about Vecna’s identity. Max, too, hears Vecna calling her name – Max is Vecna’s next target.
Nancy and Robin visit Victor Creel in the asylum and discover that Hawkins is in danger. Mike, Jonathan and Will sneak out to go looking for Eleven, who is trying to regain her powers. Hopper escapes the prison but is caught. Joyce and Murray, too, are duped by Yuri, who was supposed to get them to Hopper. Max is possessed by Vecna, but Dustin, Lucas and Steve manage to save her by playing her favourite song, ‘Running Up That Hill’, when they learn that Vecna’s spell can be broken with music.
Eleven trains with Dr. Brenner, and after she briefly harnesses her power, she decides to continue her training. Joyce and Murray manage to subdue Yuri, but their plane crashes in the wilderness. Nancy learns that Vecna is related to the Creel house after Max makes a rough drawing of Vecna’s altar. Jason, who blames Eddie for his girlfriend Chrissy’s death, goes after him with his Patrick, but Vecna kills Patrick in the lake.
In an experiment, Eleven is reminded of her childhood memories where she sees herself covered in blood and thinks that she was the cause of the massacre in the lab. In Kamchatka prison, Hopper, along with several other inmates, are given delicious food. Hopper warns them that they are being prepared for the Demogorgon. Jason is infuriated by Patrick’s death and still blames Eddie. Steve, Nancy, Robin and Eddie to the Upside Down.

Erica, Dustin, Lucas and Max have a theory about the gateways of Upside Down. Eleven goes back to her past once again to understand what led to the massacre. She then sees how she was manipulated by the orderly to remove his device, who then kills the guards and others in the lab. Back then, she overpowers him and sends the One to Upside Down. Joyce, Murray and Yuri enter the Russian prison and witness that Hopper and the other prisoners are fighting the Demogorgon. They help Hopper and a fellow prisoner escape. Nancy discovers that Vecna is Victor Creel’s son, Henry Creel.
Dr. Brenner doesn’t want to let Eleven go to Hawkins to save her friends. But Mike, Will, Jonathan and Argyle help her to escape. Hopper, Joyce, Murray, Yuri and Antonov also escape from the discovery, but they also discover several creatures from the Upside Down.
Lucas, Max, and Erica go to the Creel House to lure Vecna. Nancy, Steve, Robin, Dustin and Eddie go to the Upside Down, where Eddie sacrifices himself to save the others. Since Eleven cannot reach Hawkins on time, she and her group decide to fight Vecna from California. She enters Max’s mind to fight Vecna. Since Jason had destroyed Max’s headphones and cassette, she became vulnerable.
Eleven does take control over Vecna, but Max succumbs to her injuries and dies. Eleven uses her powers and brings back Max’s heartbeat. Nancy destroys the physical form of Vecna and kills him, but Max’s brief death allows Vecna’s gates to open, destroying several parts of Hawkins and killing Jason. Will still sense the presence of Vecna!
We know that Season 5 will be the finale of this series, but the makers are yet to reveal an exact date of its release.
