General Hospital, a daytime television soap opera that holds the record for being the longest-running American soap opera is currently in production. It is the second-longest-running soap opera in American history, following Guiding Light. The show first premiered on the ABC television network on April 1, 1963, and celebrated its 15,000th episode on June 22, 2022.
General Hospital is a collaborative effort of Frank and Doris Hursley, a married couple who were prominent soap opera writers. Initially, the show was set in an unnamed fictional city and revolved around a hospital, but during the 1970s, the city was officially named Port Charles, New York. The original cast of General Hospital featured John Beradino and Emily McLaughlin as lead actors who remained dedicated to the show until their passing in 1996 and 1991, respectively.
The story of General Hospital mostly revolves around Quartermaine and Spencer families. The last episode of General Hospital will be aired on July 13, 2023. ABC is yet to announce whether or not the show has been renewed for another year (2023-2024). They kept the series in their network so the show could celebrate 60 years of being aired. Even though they haven’t announced for it to be renewed, they haven’t announced its cancellation either. Considering the positive ratings that the show received this year, it is likely they will come back with a next season too.
