There is no doubt about Netflix’s capability to produce original shows spanning the full spectrum of genres. This year, Netflix is bringing a crime thriller, “Copycat Killer”. The trailer was launched on Netflix’s official YouTube handle earlier this month which rocked the online fraternity with the new-age, cat-and-mouse chase set in the 90s Taipei! Today, we will be talking about this show and see if this show might be worth your weekend binge or not!
Copycat Killer is adapted from the crime mystery novel by the Japanese writer and winner of the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Literature, Miyuki Miyabe.
The story revolves around the first serial murders in the country and how the city is thrown into chaos as a series of gruesome murders take place, which brings a well-known prosecutor, Kuo Hsiao-chi (played by Wu-Kang Ren, who won the Asian Academy Creative Award in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category for “Light the Night”) to engage the murders with a dangerous manipulator who will go to any lengths and use all his might to bring down his motives.
In mind-bending crimes, the murderer manipulates the media, creates spectacles out of his heinousity and hence controls the psychology of the masses, leaving the prosecutor to bear the weight of the case and its toll on his well-being.
While this is known that the show is headlined by the award-winning actor, Wu-Kang Ren, the cast includes the likes of Ruby Lin, who was praised for her performance in another Netflix Crime Drama, “Light the Night”, Chia-Yen Ko (Who Killed Cock Robin?, Office Girls), Fandy Fan (We are Champions), Cammy Chiang (Light the Night, Tears on Fire).
The show is co-directed by Henri Chang and Jung-chi Chang. This is the first collaboration of both creatives not just with Netflix but with any of the leading OTT platforms. Henri Chang is noted for his direction in the masterpiece Shi Zui Zhe, another mystery drama that got released in 2019 without due recognition.
Fans of Asian crime drama will have to till the end of the month to see the show on Netflix. The best thing about watching shows on Netflix is that they can go on a binge spree, watching all the episodes in one go, which is not the case with HBO productions. So, get ready on your couch with your favourite snacks as Copycat Killer will be live on screens this weekend, 31st March 2023!
With the trailer of Netflix’s YouTube page, we can guarantee that the show is a must-watch for crime enthusiasts and anyone who is interested in understanding the criminal mind. The popular detective, Kuo Hsiao-chi will try and unwrap a detailed analysis of each case and uncover mysteries that will shed light on the factors that led these killers to commit such heinous crimes.
What we personally liked about the trailer (and are expecting from the show) is how it will raise a question about the responsibility of media and entertainment industries in portraying violence and its potential influence on vulnerable individuals. It prompts us to think about the ethical and moral obligations of the creators of such content.
